The NBA draft is over and it’s time to look at who has been drafted and how successful they’ve been thus far in the NBA. I’ve been following this for years and there’s always one name that always raises eyebrows and that is Dario Saric.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are all set to start the season with a roster that is lacking some star power, but also lacks some depth. That lack of star power comes from the fact that they traded away the best player in the NBA and brought in a bunch of role players. The role players include Kyrie Irving, Tristan Thompson, and Omri Casspi, so the Cavaliers likely have some talent in the backcourt, but they are missing a true star big man. That’s why Kevin Love is back.
If we told you that the NBA had never had a player ranked in the top 100 of the NBA’s most talented players, you might think it was just one of those things that only happen to other sports. But, the NBA has never had a player ranked in the top 100, or even the top 99, of the league’s most talented players. That’s right, according to Basketball Reference, the last time someone in the NBA was ranked in the top 100 was (drumroll, please) … David Robinson, who was ranked 30th in 2000.. The Dream Team not only won a gold medal en masse in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, but they also established a gold standard. Since then, every Team USA participation in the Olympics has been compared to the original. Arenas, Gilbert, a former NBA great, has had enough of it as well.
Arenas, a former All-NBA guard and current coach of the Big Three’s Enemies, understands what it takes to be one of the best players in the league. That is why he believes any parallels to the 1992 squad are terribly inadequate.
In 2012, Arenas, Gilbert announced his retirement from the NBA.
Arenas, Gilbert was one of the NBA’s top scorers with the Washington Wizards for three seasons, from 2004 to 2007. He became the NBA’s youngest player to average at least 29 points, six assists, and two steals in a season in 2005–06.
Arenas is also the subject of one of the numerous free agency restrictions. Arenas became a restricted free agency after earning the NBA Most Improved Player title in 2002–03. He didn’t have a normal rookie deal since he was a second-round selection.
Arenas’ Golden State Warriors have first dibs on him and could match any offer sheet. The Wizards, on the other hand, went for broke. Arenas accepted a six-year, $65 million contract. The Warriors couldn’t afford the $8.5 million first-year contract because they didn’t have enough cap space.
The Arenas clause in the collective bargaining agreement limits the first-year compensation that clubs may give restricted free agents with two years or fewer in the league.
Arenas was a top-10 scorer for three consecutive seasons until injuries took their toll. He played in the NBA till 2012, then retired after one season in China.
Arenas was never a part of a national team, which is ironic given his position on Team USA.
Arenas isn’t interested in hearing any Team USA parallels to the Dream Team.
Arenas, Gilbert was emphatic during an interview with Fanatics View that parallels to the legendary 1992 Olympic squad are absurd.
“I’m a member of the Dream Team. With the exception of one or two guys, they had the best players on the squad. Consider Chris Mullin, who was a top-six scorer in the NBA at the time; I believe he was (fourth) or (fifth) that year. They had the top six scorers, with Dominique Wilkins being the only one who didn’t make it. As a result, they possessed the top players in their respective positions.”
The last time Team USA had anything close to that level of skill was in 2008 and 2012. After a disappointing bronze medal performance in Athens in 2004, Team USA was dubbed the Redeem Team and surged to a gold medal in 2008. The 2020 Tokyo team, however, is not of that quality.
“When we compare our lineups to theirs, and we have guys on our team who aren’t even the second-best player on their team, let alone the third-best, let alone the top 100 in the NBA, it’s hard to simply say, ‘Oh, they’re the same team.’”
Arenas is correct. There were 11 Hall of Famers on the Dream Team. Keldon Johnson and JaVale McGee are on Team USA’s Tokyo roster. No offense to either Johnson or McGee, but they’re neither Michael Jordan or Patrick Ewing.
Gilbert Arenas claims that Team USA does not have the same mentality.

Despite winning the previous three Olympic gold medals, Team USA finished eighth in the 2019 FIBA World Cup. Some of this, according to Gilbert Arenas, is due to the fact that international competition is no longer as significant as it once was.
“I don’t believe we take it as seriously as everyone else, and I believe that is the problem. The Dream Team’s mission was to go out into the world and let everyone know who they were. That’s something we don’t do anymore.”
Arenas does not believe Team USA will win a gold medal in Tokyo. Australia, Team USA’s semifinal opponent, won a pre-Olympics exhibition match between the two teams. The current team also lost an exhibition against Nigeria and began the Olympics by losing to France. It was just Team USA’s sixth Olympic defeat in 19 appearances in the Games.
Luka Doni’s domination, according to Arenas, offers Slovenia a puncher’s chance to win gold.
“Sh*t, I mean, he really went all out for Dallas. He had that YMCA squad, and he led them to the playoffs. As a result, he has a chance. Yes, he has a chance.”
The attraction of possibly losing a large paycheck by playing for Team USA is becoming less appealing as NBA salaries continue to rise. Gilbert Arenas is absolutely correct. At this point, Dream Team analogies are ridiculous.
