What are Aquatic Sports?
Aquatic sports are those which are played in water. They can be divided into two main types: those in which the player is in or on the water, such as swimming, diving, surfing, water polo, and synchronized swimming; and those in which the player is not in contact with the water, such as rowing and sailing.
There are a wide variety of aquatic sports, each with its own unique set of rules and regulations. Some, like swimming and diving, are governed by international bodies such as the International Olympic Committee. Others, like rowing and sailing, have their own separate governing organizations. Still others, like surfing and water polo, do not have any formal governing body at all.
Aquatic sports can be played in both natural bodies of water such as lakes and rivers, and in man-made structures such as pools and aquaria. Some aquatic sports require special equipment, such as boats or boards; others can be played with nothing more than a bathing suit.
Aquatic sports offer a great way to stay fit and have fun at the same time. They can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. Whether you’re looking for a competitive sport to get involved in or simply want to cool off on a hot day, there’s an aquatic sport out there for you!
Swimming is a sport in which competitors try to move as fast as possible in water, using any standard swimming stroke. Swimming is one of the oldest and most popular sports in the world, and has been part of the Olympic Games since 1896.
There are four main strokes used in swimming competitions: freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke. Freestyle is the fastest and most popular stroke, and all four strokes are used in the individual medley event.
Swimming can be performed in natural bodies of water such as lakes and rivers, or in man-made pools. Swimming pools come in all shapes and sizes, from small backyard pools to large Olympic-sized pools.
Diving is a sport in which athletes compete from a springboard or platform on how well they can execute various aerial maneuvers. Divers must enter the water vertically without touching the side of the pool, and must perform a variety of flips and twists before entering the water again. In competition, each diver is given five dives to perform, with each dive scored on a scale of 1-10 by a panel of seven judges. The highest and lowest scores are dropped, and the remaining scores are averaged to create the final score.
Water polo is a team sport played in water where two teams try to score goals by throwing a ball into the other team’s net. The game is played in a pool and each team has seven players, including a goalkeeper. The game is divided into four quarters and each team gets one time-out per quarter.
Water polo originated in England in the 1870s and was originally called “aquatic football.” The first official game was played in 1881 between two teams from London. The sport quickly spread to other countries, including the United States, where it was first played in 1888.
Water polo is an Olympic sport and is governed by the International Swimming Federation (FINA).
Surfing is a water sport in which the surfer (or surfers) rides on the crest and face of a wave which is carrying him or her towards the shore. Waves suitable for surfing occur particularly when strong winds blow over long stretches of open water, forming wind-swept swells.
Canoeing and Kayaking
canoeing and kayaking are both paddle sports which originated as a means of transportation. Canoeing is done in an open boat which is propelled with a single-bladed paddle, while kayaking is done in a closed boat which is propelled with a double-bladed paddle. Both activities can be done for recreation, fitness, or racing.
Canoeing is often considered a more peaceful activity as it can be done in tandem with another person, while kayaking is often seen as more exhilarating as it is typically done solo. Kayaks also tend to be faster and more maneuverable than canoes. Canoeing and kayaking can be done on calm waters such as lakes and rivers, or on whitewater rapids.
Rowing is a sport that can be done in a group or individually. It is done with a boat that has oars, and the goal is to move the boat across the water using the oars. This can be done for recreation or competition. Rowing is a great workout because it uses all of the major muscle groups, and it can be done outdoors in beautiful locations.
Dragon Boat Racing
Dragon boat racing is a Chinese tradition that has been taking place for over 2,000 years. It is said to have started when the famous poet Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Mi Lo River in 278 BCE. The local people tried to rescue him by paddling out in their boats, but they were too late. To honor his memory, they began rowing their boats up and down the river every year on the anniversary of his death.
Over time, dragon boat racing came to be seen as a way to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits. The boats themselves are decorated with dragon heads and tails, and each team has a drummer who keeps the rowers paddling in time.
Today, dragon boat racing is practiced all over the world and is especially popular in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore. It is usually held during the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar (which falls in June or July on the Western calendar).
