United States in the Winter Olympics
Since the United States first participated in the Winter Olympics in 1924, American athletes have brought home a total of 239 medals. The United States has won more Winter Olympic medals than any other country.
The United States has done especially well in certain winter sports. As of 2018, American athletes have won more medals in ice hockey than athletes from any other country. The United States is also one of only three countries (along with Norway and Austria) to have won more than 100 medals in alpine skiing.
Some of the most successful American winter Olympians include figure skaters Peggy Fleming and Scott Hamilton, speed skater Bonnie Blair, and Alpine skiers Lindsey Vonn and Bode Miller.

The United States has not fared well in the Paralympics as of late. In the 2016 Rio Games, the U.S. team placed tenth in the medal count with a total of 48. This was a significant drop from the 2012 London Games, where the U.S. team placed fourth with 104 medals. 2017 was a better year for the United States, as the team won a total of 120 medals, an increase of 50 from the previous games. The U.S. team is expected to do well in the 2020 Tokyo Games.

The United States has been participating in the Summer Paralympic Games since 1960, and in the Winter Paralympic Games since 1976. Although the United States has never won the overall Paralympic medal count, it has come close several times, most recently in 2004. This was also the year that the United States had its best ever showing in both the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games. In total, the United States has won 586 Paralympic medals (246 gold, 187 silver, and 153 bronze).

The United States has competed in every Summer Paralympic Games since 1960. In 1960, the country won 12 medals (4 gold, 5 silver, 3 bronze). The United States has never won the overall medal count, but has come close several times. The best ever showing by the United States was in 1984 when it won 95 medals (34 gold, 30 silver, 31 bronze). In 2004, the United States had its second best performance ever with 102 medals (40 gold, 32 silver, 30 bronze).
The most successful Paralympian from the United States is swimmer Trischa Zorn who has won 41 medals (32 gold, 6 silver, 3 bronze) across 7 different Paralympic Games (1984-2004). Zorn is also tied with fellow American swimmer Erin Popovich for the most gold medals won by a female paralympian with 32.
Winter Paralympics
The United States made its Winter Paralympic debut in 1976. Since then, it has competed in every edition of the Games except for 1980 and 1994. The most successful American at the Winter Paralympics is alpine skier Joe Phelps who won 12 medals (6 gold, 3 silver, 3 bronze) across 4 editions of the Games (1984-1992).
