Which Brother Has More Wins?

The question is easy. Which brother has more wins: Maurice or Kevin? The answer may seem obvious, but it can get confusing when looking at the records through a different lens.

The “jeff van gundy net worth” is a question that is asked often. The answer to the question is, “Jorge Lorenzo”.

Whether it’s unwrapping gifts beneath the tree or dining around the dinner table, most brothers spend Christmas Day together. Most Christmases have seen one or both of Jeff Van Gundy and Stan Van Gundy at a basketball game.

Because of their lengthy coaching histories and excellent broadcasting careers, both Jeff and Stan have solidified their reputation as NBA aristocracy. However, one brother may boast about being the more successful instructor.

The coaching careers of Jeff and Stan Van Gundy have spanned decades.

Despite being two and a half years younger than his brother, Jeff was the first in the family to coach in the NBA. JVG joined the New York Knicks as an assistant coach in 1989 after stints at Providence and Rutgers. Van Gundy spent six-and-a-half seasons under four different head coaches, including Pat Riley, before taking over for Don Nelson in 1995-96.

Jeff took the Knicks to the playoffs in all but one of his six seasons as their head coach, including an appearance in the NBA Finals in 1998-99. Then, over two years after retiring from the Knicks, JVG decided to become the head coach of the Houston Rockets, a position he’d hold until the 2006-07 season.

Stan Van Gundy, the older statesman of the Van Gundy tandem, coached for 12 years before landing his first NBA job, which includes a one-year stint at Wisconsin. After new Heat president Pat Riley was denied permission to lure Jeff from the Knicks, Stan was hired as an assistant coach by the Miami Heat in 1995. “I wanted at least one Van Gundy with me,” Riley subsequently told the New York Times.

Before taking over for the Hall of Fame coach before of the 2003-04 season, SVG worked as a faithful assistant under Riley for eight years. He would oversee the Heat for two seasons before resigning during his third, the year the Heat won their first NBA championship. Stan was named head coach of the Orlando Magic in 2007, and he led Dwight Howard and his teammates to the NBA Finals in 2009. In 2014, he became the head coach of the Detroit Pistons, and in 2020, he was the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans for a single season.

Which of the Van Gundy brothers has the most victories?

Brotherly rivalry between Jeff and Stan is closer than you would assume. However, only one coach can boast of having won more games as an NBA head coach.

Jeff, who is 59 years old, has a coaching record of 430-318 in 11 seasons. He’s also 88 postseason games under his belt, with a 44-44 record. Stan, who is 62 years old, has a record of 554-425 in 13 seasons, with a 48-43 playoff record to boot.

Stan has more wins as a head coach than his younger brother since he has coached almost 200 more games. Jeff, on the other hand, has a little higher winning % than Stan, with a.575 to.566 advantage. They are ranked 25th and 28th all-time among NBA coaches who have coached 400 or more games.

Both Jeff and Stan Van Gundy may return to coaching at some point in the future.

Jeff and Stan have both found success as broadcasters after long careers as coaches. Since 2007, JVG has been a regular part of ESPN’s broadcasting team, serving as one of the primary color commentators for ABC’s NBA Finals. Stan also worked as an analyst for ESPN in 2018 before joining Turner in 2019. In 2020, he left Turner to coach the Pelicans, but he came back in 2021.

That said, it wouldn’t surprise me if one of the coaches switched from a microphone to a clipboard down the road.

Following his four-year stint with the Pistons, it seemed like Stan was done with coaching for good. SVG returned to the bench after being offered the chance to coach Zion Williamson and the Pelicans. Van Gundy even said on the Stupodity show that his departure “wasn’t a mutual choice,” implying that he wasn’t ready to retire from coaching.

Given that he hasn’t coached since 2007, Jeff may seem to be pleased with his job at ESPN. According to sources from as recently as 2020, the former Knicks and Rockets coach “desperately wants to return to coaching.” He was even a finalist for the Rockets’ head coaching position in 2020, but Stephen Silas beat him out.

It would be fantastic if both Van Gundys returned to coaching. In the meanwhile, we get to hear them impart their basketball knowledge.
