Which States Have More Than 1 MLB Baseball Team?

Array

This is one of the most frequently asked questions on Quora. The answer to this question can be found by clicking on the link below, which will take you a map that shows all 50 states and their MLB teams.

There are 30 states that have a major league baseball team. The states with the most teams are Florida, Texas, California, and New York. Read more in detail here: what states have a major league baseball team?.

To a community, a Major League Baseball franchise may mean everything. It acts as a unifier for residents in a variety of cities and towns. After all, Big League Baseball clubs are usually based in major cities. Due to the fact that there are only 30 MLB clubs in the American and National Leagues, not every state has a franchise.

Consider that some states have several MLB clubs while others have none at all to get a sense of how unevenly MLB franchises are distributed throughout the country. Let’s take a deeper look at how teams are distributed around the United States, including which states have one team, which have many teams, and which states have none.

The majority of states with an MLB franchise only have one. There are eight states in all (plus one city that is not yet a state):

  • Arizona. In Phoenix, the Arizona Diamondbacks play.
  • Colorado. Denver is the home of the Colorado Rockies.
  • Georgia. Georgia’s Atlanta Braves are known as the club of the 1990s.
  • Maryland. Maryland is home to the Baltimore Orioles, in addition to crab cakes and football.
  • Massachusetts. The Boston Red Sox play in this state.
  • Minnesota. In Minneapolis, the Minnesota Twins play.
  • Washington. Mount Rainier casts a shadow on the Seattle Mariners.
  • Wisconsin. Although the Green Bay Packers are the most popular team in the state, baseball fans here support the Milwaukee Brewers.
  • Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States. The Washington Nationals are based in the nation’s capital, which is not legally a state (though many of its people would want it to be).

Aside from those teams, there are some states that are home to several clubs.

While eight states have just one MLB club, seven states have several franchises. These are some of them:

  • California. With five clubs (the Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, and San Diego Padres), it’s only natural that one of the country’s biggest states (in terms of geography and population) would have the most baseball teams.
  • Florida. Florida had no MLB teams before to 1993, but expansion clubs were added in 1993 (the Florida Marlins) and 1998 (the Florida Panthers) (the Tampa Bay Rays).
  • Illinois. The Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs are two of baseball’s oldest teams, and they both play in the same city.
  • Ohio. Ohio is home to both the Cleveland Guardians and the Cincinnati Reds.
  • New York is a big city. Because New York is larger than Chicago, it’s only natural that the city would have two baseball teams: the Yankees and Mets.
  • Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies are on different sides of the state.
  • Texas. The Lone Star State is represented by both the Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros.

Finally, according to Legion Report, 33 states do not have an MLB franchise. These are some of the states:

  • Alabama
  • Alaska
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • Nebraska
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire is a state in the United States.
  • New Jersey is a state in the United States.
  • New Mexico is located in the United States.
  • North Carolina is a state in the United States.
  • North Dakota is a state in North America.
  • Oklahoma
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island is a state in the United States.
  • South Carolina is a state in the United States.
  • South Dakota is located in the United States.
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia is a state in the US.
  • Wyoming

If you’ve done your math, you’ll see that we’re one team short on these lists. This is due to the fact that one club, the Toronto Blue Jays of Canada, is based outside of the United States.

This absence of a team isn’t a concern in several states. The Nationals, for example, have a strong following in Virginia, while the Red Sox have a strong following in New England. However, many of the states on that list would welcome an expansion club in the future.
