Lamens, ranked No. 125, had a successful run to the title by defeating top players like Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova, Italian Lucia Bronzetti, Romanian qualifier Ana Bogdan, and Frenchwoman Diane Parry. On the other hand, Birrell, ranked No. 150, also had an impressive performance in the Osaka tournament by defeating players like Chinese Saisai Zheng, Belgian Elise Mertens, Japanese wildcard Sara Saito, and Japanese qualifier Aoi Ito.
