Russian player Anna Kalinskaya, seeded No. 10, advanced to the round of 16 at the China Open after American Peyton Stearns retired during their match at the National Tennis Center in Beijing on Monday night.
Kalinskaya, ranked No. 14, was leading 3-6, 6-3, 3-1 when Stearns, ranked No. 46, withdrew from the match.
Next, Kalinskaya will face Ukrainian qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva.
In the previous round, Kalinskaya defeated American qualifier Hailey Baptiste in a tough match (3-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5)).
In the earlier rounds of the tournament, Stearns had victories over Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (6-2, 6-4) and Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No. 20 seed (7-5, 6-2).
