The sixth seed Sara Sorribes Tormo from Spain advanced to the semifinals of the Abierto Tampico after defeating the fourth seed Tatjana Maria from Germany with a score of 7-6 (6), 6-2 on Friday night.
Ranked 112, Sorribes Tormo will now face Canadian qualifier Marina Stakusic in the next round.
Before her victory, the Spaniard also beat Mexican wildcard Ana Sofia Sanchez (6-0, 6-1) and Russian Polina Kudermetova (6-3, 6-4).
Earlier in the tournament, Maria, ranked 95, won against Serb Nina Stojanovic (6-3, 6-1) and Slovenian Tamara Zidansek (7-5, 6-2).
