Krejcikova puts an end to Svitolina’s Olympic aspirations

In the match, the Ukrainian bronze medallist dominated the middle stanza, breaking twice after exchanging two breaks each with her opponent in the opener, which was settled in a tiebreak.

The third set followed a similar pattern to the first, with each player breaking twice before Krejcikova secured the win in the tenth and final game.

While Svitolina made a comeback to break Krejcikova’s serve at 5-3, she couldn’t maintain the pressure, and Krejcikova capitalized on a loose service game to win the match.

Despite the support of the crowd, Svitolina left the arena emotional after the match, falling to a world-class opponent in the third round.

Meanwhile, Svitolina’s compatriot Marta Kostyuk secured a surprise victory over world No 8 Maria Sakkari, coming back from a set down to reach the quarter-finals at the Olympic Games.

With Svitolina out of the competition, Kostyuk is now the sole remaining representative for Ukraine in the women’s singles event.

Kostyuk will face Donna Vekic in the quarter-finals, with the possibility of earning a medal if she advances further in the competition.

To keep the Ukrainian flag flying in the women’s singles event, Kostyuk will need to deliver a strong performance against Vekic in the next round.
